Cancun Area - Isla Mujeres Turtle farm |
|
The tortugranja, or "Turtle Farm" on Isla Mujeres Several species of sea turtle have been laying their eggs in the soft sand along Isla Mujeres' peaceful shores for thousands of years. Although they are endangered, sea turtles are still killed throughout Latin America for their meat, shell and eggs. In the 1980s, efforts by a local fisherman led to the founding of the Centro de Investigaciones and the Isla Mujeres Turtle Farm, which protects the turtles' egg laying grounds. They collect and deposit the eggs, out of harm's way.![]() Hatchlings live in large pools for up to a year, and are then tagged for monitoring and released. Because most sea turtles in the wild die within their first few months, the practice of protecting them until they are a year old significantly increases their chances of survival. It is estimated that only approx 1 in 1,000 baby sea turtle hatchlings make it to an adult turtle.
The Turtle Farm is a scientific facility and the small $2 entrance fee helps to support and protect these magnificent creatures. The Isla Mujeres turtle farm is located on the southern part of the island facing Cancun, and is supported by the Mexican government, local volunters, public donations and private funds. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
