Snakes around Cancun

Don't go off the beaten path in vegetated areas. Never touch a snake. You don't know which snakes down here will kill you fast and which are harmless. Any snake bites should be attended to immediately by a physician.

We have heard of only one serious snake bite since 1983. The bite was right after Hurricane Gilbert when the snakes in the Puerto Morelos herpetarium escaped. One of them bit a woman and she was in grave danger but recovered.
