Sea Lice in the Caribbean

Sea Lice Bites - The bites of Sea Lice are caused by larvae of the sea anemone. These occur in salt water off coastal regions. Sea lice usually attach themselves to fish but clearly can bite humans.

Here is a story of a young woman snorkeling off the coast of Cancun. The history she gives is extremely typical of sea lice. Shortly after snorkeling she felt a sudden burning sensation underneath both breasts. No rash was evident until she returned home 2 days later. The typical eruptions are almost always under the bathing suit and appear as Sea Lice closeuppapules or papulovesicles. These lesions can persist for 1 to 2 weeks.

Sea Lice around Cancun - During late April through June, a stinging organism called agua mala or sea lice is prevalent in these waters. These are tiny microscopic jellyfish eggs. An itching hive results within four or five hours after it brushes against you. Always shower immediately after coming out of the ocean. Be sure to rinse under your bathing suit and apply water vigorously to your belly button and all hairy areas such as underarms and pubic hair. If you do get these itchy swellings, which look like a rash rather than mosquito bites, there are a couple of remedies: Logoderm, a cortisone-based creme available in any local drugstore, applied twice daily is a big help.

Soyaloid polvo, a poultice applied twice daily will also relieve the itching. Plain white vinegar also helps, especially if sponged on immediately after coming out of the water.

Sea Lice Treatment in the Outdoors - If one suspects sea lice bites after diving or snorkeling, hydrogen peroxide or a quick soap and water scrub would be helpful. One must watch for a secondary skin infection.

Sea Lice info for Healthcare Providers - Medical Treatment Without treatment, these lesions usually disappear in 1 to 2 weeks. However, most patients would appreciate getting rid of this as soon as possible. Topical or systemic corticosteroids provide relief and topical antibiotic ointment may be beneficial to impede secondary infection.
